山達基是一個應用性的宗教哲學，它和許多宗教與哲學有許多共通的信念。山達基認為人是一個靈魂個體，不光是只有血肉之驅而已。當然，那些贊同時下流行的科學理論的人，會認為人只是物質，是由一堆化合物組成，依照刺激反應機制在運作。山達基對他們而言是非常不同的觀點。
山達基認為人基本上是善良的；只是人們過去的生活經驗使他們做出錯誤的行為，然而這並非是他的本性。他經常會錯誤地只依照自己的利益來解決他的問題，結果卻為自己和他人帶來更多的麻煩。山達基認為人們進步的程度，與他能保有多少精神層次的完整與價值、以及維持誠實與正直，是成正比的。而且事實上，他墮落的程度也與他拋棄多少那些特質成正比。
山達基這個字是從拉丁文scio而來，意思是指「瞭解字的完全意義」，以及希臘字logos意思是「學習」。山達基在字面上的意思是「知道如何去了解」。
山達基的創辦人是L.羅恩 賀伯特先生。他一生都致力於尋找那些困擾人類數千年問題的解答。賀伯特先生的過人智慧、他的好奇心與無限的冒險精神，推動他從少年時期就開始的研究工作。賀伯特先生首次廣泛發表的研究成果並非山達基，而是另一個領域，「戴尼提」。戴尼提這個字是從希臘字dia，意思是「透過」以及nous，意思是「靈魂」
