I have a long-standing interest in the effects of reading instruction, especially in the beginning stages of reading. I have conducted research in classrooms, examining how different aspects of reading instruction affect children´s word recognition and perception of reading. I have taught remedial reading and special education in elementary and middle schools. Prior to my current position, I was also a Senior Scientist at the Center for the Study of Reading and a principal investigator at the National Reading Research Center, also funded by OERI. At the Center, I co-authored the summary of Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print; I have published on all areas of reading education.Degrees:
