Associate Research Scientist, CHGD;
Associate Professor, Department of Psychology;
Faculty Associate, Center for Chinese Studies
Twila Tardif is a developmental psychologist whose current research focuses on questions of language and cognitive development in China and the U.S. She is interested in discovering how the cultures we grow up in and the languages we speak help to shape who and what we are. Much of her work has focused on children´s early language development in Mandarin and Cantonese, and on examining related issues in Chinese children´s cognitive and emotional development.
Currently, she is collaborating with colleagues in Beijing and Hong Kong on a longitudinal study of over 300 children in each of these locations to follow children´s earliest language abilities through their transitions to schooling and literacy experiences. In addition, she is involved in several studies of Chinese children´s early social and emotional development, and on parents´ conceptions of developmental milestones in China, Japan, and the U.S.
Tardif is currently Editor of the Journal of Psychology in Chinese Societies and an Editorial Consultant for Child Development.
