MISSION STATEMENT
Building on the strength of its core schools and disciplines, Duke is
poised to take advantage of inter- and multi-disciplinary
collaborations to become an institution distinguished for the breadth
and depth of its social science research. The SSRI exists to make this
possible; its mission is to extend the efforts of social scientists at
Duke University in creating and communicating new knowledge in the
social and behavioral sciences. To achieve its mission the SSRI has the
following functions:
First, it helps social scientists across the campus in formulating,
supporting, implementing, evaluating, and presenting social scientific
research.
Second, it assists the various social science disciplines achieve their
goals in the research enterprise.
Third, it supplements and extends the disciplinary research mission by
providing new opportunities for the creation and communication of
social scientific knowledge in inter-, cross-, and multi-disciplinary
topics and settings. The SSRI does so not only by assisting current
areas, but also by providing a forum through which social scientists at
Duke and elsewhere can enter into new individual and collaborative
projects.
Fourth, it serves to enhance the training of social scientists across
fields and regardless of level, using common methodologies and shared
data to build economies of scale and ensure that scholars at Duke have
access to the tools, resources, and knowledge that they need to conduct
their research.
