at their initial and final reports, they simply designated 2 thresholds on each
word (240ms for reading "attending the word" and 360ms for "having trouble"),
and the system would highlight and read-outloud (pre-recorded voice) the word in
question. There were some initial testing with children, and the system showed
some promise. They say they will be […]

Until about two decades ago, the study of writing systems and their relationship
to literacy acquisition was sparse and generally modeled after studies of
English language learners. This situation is now changing. As the worldwide

Quantile Regression

Quantile regression is a statistical technique intended to estimate,
and conduct inference about, conditional quantile functions.
Just as classical linear regression methods based on
minimizing sums of squared residuals enable one to estimate models for
conditional mean functions, quantile regression methods offer a mechanism
for estimating models for the conditional median function, and the full
range […]

Dr. Kim’s recent article (doi:10.1016/j.bandl.2004.05.001)
compares visual processing of poor readers in Thailand and Korea. Does
this mean that reading Thai and Korean involves dramatically different
levels of visual anlaysis? Or maybe they differ in the "entry fee" –
the visual processing capacity required to learn to read?

Bermúdez-Otero and Börjars (2005) argue that the Markedness constraints
in OT, or CON in general, are not (all) innate. Part of their argument
is based on the refutal of a couple of evolutionary schema that are
deemed to be impossible. Basically, CON would be too remote from
survival for adaptation, and too complex and optimal for exaptation.
Which […]
