UltraVNC supports Windows Vista
I have been struggling with TightVNC and Windows Vista. See this earlier post for problems with the combination.
UltraVNC now has a Beta version that supports Vista. The 1.04RC6 allows you to log in at the login screen, and works well with the annoying User Account Control. It is reportedly compatible with other VNC clients. My test with TightVNC client/UltraVNC server was ok — screen pulling worked well, but don’t expect the file exchange functions to talk to each other.
Problems? Sure.
I experience a period of several minutes after logging in where the desktop on the remote site is basically blank and no activities on the server side are shown on the client. It comes back after a while.
Closing the client sometimes result in crashing — some resources not cleaned up?
The DSM plugin for encryption does not work — key file generation fails on both server and client and the client won’t connect.
Inspite of these minor issues, my advice for vista users is to switch to UltraVNC.
